A word on overlooking the obvious

I am always fascinated when I watch others overlook the obvious.  Not by their overlooking per se, but more because I know that if they’re doing it, so am I.  Often I can’t figure out what it is I am overlooking.  Sometimes though it hits me like a slap to the face.

When I watch others overlooking, I ask how it happens.  I hope this will help me unravel this in myself.  I have noticed it is done mostly to protect ourselves.  We humans refuse to acknowledge some realities, or learn new ways of being quite often to protect ourselves from feeling bad.  This seems perfectly logical, unless you notice the often-overlooked fact that in doing this, we can actually be doing ourselves more harm than good.

I have been shocked by the realities I have tried to avoid.  Not shocked by their shockingness, but mostly because I’ve laughed at them when I’ve faced up to them.  Truth is never as scary as walking around in the dark, trying to avoid things that make you feel bad.

Today I will open my eyes and purposefully look for the obvious.  I will step lightly, in case I bump into something I wasn’t expecting.
